We welcome the Oversight Board’s decision today, February 27, 2024, on this case which deals with two pieces of content posted to Facebook. Each share a news article about the conviction and sentencing of a member of the Proud Boys who participated in the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. The first piece of content included a caption that states “And…another scumbag down” while the second piece of content repeats in the caption much of the text of the article. In each instance, while the content refers to Proud Boys, it does not praise the organization. One piece of content criticizes a member of the group while the other shares news about the organization without engaging in glorification, support, or representation.
Upon initial review, Meta removed this content for violating our Dangerous Organizations and Individuals policy, as laid out in the Facebook Community Standards. However, after the board brought the cases to our attention, we determined that we had removed the content in error and reinstated each post.
There will be no further updates to this case bundle.
