We welcome the Oversight Board’s decision today on this case bundle which deals with two pieces of content that mention or depict Al-Shabaab.

The first piece of content is a photo posted to Facebook depicting a weapon and military equipment laying on the ground at the feet of soldiers. The accompanying caption shares, “The national army and the heroes of the residents killed two Al Shabaab.”

The second piece of content concerns two photos posted to Facebook depicting a pillar with the emblem of Al-Shabaab being painted either on or over. The accompanying caption shares “The terrorists that used to hide… have come out of their holes and the world has finally seen them.”

For both cases, upon initial review, Meta removed this content for violating our Dangerous Organizations and Individuals policy, as laid out in the Facebook Community Standards. However, after the board brought the cases to our attention, we determined that we had removed the content in error and reinstated both posts.

There will be no further updates to this case.
