Today, the Oversight Board selected a case referred by Meta regarding a video posted on Instagram calling for women to join the user’s political protest against the Cuban government. The video was accompanied by a caption criticizing men for being cowardly and comparing them to rats and horses laden with chamber pots.

Meta determined that the content violated our Hate Speech policy, as laid out in the Instagram Community Guidelines and Facebook Community Standards, and the post was removed from the platform.

Meta referred this case to the board because we found it significant and difficult as it creates tension between our values of safety, voice and dignity.

Meta prohibits speech that attacks people based on certain protected characteristics, including sex. Meta defines an attack to include “comparisons, generalizations, or unqualified behavioral statements (in written or visual form) to or about: animals that are culturally perceived as intellectually or physically inferior.”

We will implement the board’s decision once it has finished deliberating, and we will update this post accordingly. Please see the board’s website for the decision when they issue it.
