Oversight Board Selects a Case Regarding a Post from a News Outlet Discussing the Taliban Government in Afghanistan

SEP 15, 2022

Today, the Oversight Board selected a case appealed by a Facebook user regarding a post discussing the new government in Afghanistan under the Taliban. The post, from an Indian news outlet’s Facebook page, contains text and an external link to an article on the news outlet’s website. The post quotes Zabiullah Mujahid, an official central spokesman for the Taliban which is a Tier 1 designated terrorist organization under Meta’s policies, in reference to the opening of schools and colleges for girls and women at the start of the Afghan new year.

Upon initial review, Meta took down this content for violating our policy on Dangerous Individuals and Organizations, as laid out in the Facebook Community Standards. Upon second review, after the user appealed the initial decision, we upheld the decision. However, upon further review, prompted by the user’s appeal to the Oversight Board, Meta determined that we removed the content in error and reinstated it.

We will implement the board’s decision once it has finished deliberating, and we will update this post accordingly. Please see the board’s website for the decision when they issue it.

Case decision

We welcome the Oversight Board’s decision today on this case. Meta previously reinstated this content as it did not violate our policies and was removed in error, so no further action will be taken on this content.

After conducting a review of the recommendations provided by the board in addition to their decision, we will update this page.
