Today, the Oversight Board selected a case appealed by an Instagram user concerning a carousel (a single Instagram post that can contain up to ten images with a single caption) with each picture depicting a different word in Arabic that can be used in a derogatory way towards men with “effeminate mannerisms”. The post contains a caption in which the user explains they had previously been abused with one of the terms and that the post is an attempt to reclaim the power of such hurtful terms.
Upon initial review, Meta took down this content for violating our policy on Hate Speech, as laid out in the Instagram Community Guidelines and Facebook Community Standards. However, upon multiple additional reviews, we determined we removed this content in error and reinstated it.
We will implement the board’s decision once it has finished deliberating, and we will update this post accordingly. Please see the board’s website for the decision when they issue it.
We welcome the Oversight Board’s decision today on this case. Meta previously reinstated this content as it did not violate our policies and was removed in error, so no further action will be taken on this content.
After conducting a review of the recommendations provided by the board in addition to their decision, we will update this page.
